I recently was able to reformat and reinstall XP with the help of all of you..
I still have a few troubles that I am hoping you can answer..
Windows hangs at shutdown..it says saving settings..you hear it click off,
but the main tower does not turn off...I looked in device man for something
called APM?NT legacy that one site suggested I do..nothing like that in my
device man..also looked in power options..I don't have Anv. Power Man.
Support avail...so, what are some other things I could look at..
also.while looking at device manager, discovered some things..not sure what
to do about them.
Intel DBM SMBUS Controller 24c3 has a red X.(code 24)..it says drive is
disabled..there are 3 other INTEL things that are OK...and under other
devices there is a USB Contoller with a Yellow ?....and there is a RED X on
something called the MPFP...when i look further it says..ROOT\Legacy mpfp\0000
I know some of these could be potential problems, but I don't know what to
do with them...any help would be greatly appreciated..I really would like to
finish this crash repair with all of you, rather than paying someone to do it
for me..it seems like I am so close...THANKS!

Hi SL3,

Sounds like you need to install motherboard drivers. What is the make and
model of the computer? If the needed drivers were not supplied on an install
CD from the computer manufacturer, perhaps you can download them from their
website.

Hi...really? It's a dell dimension...and when I go to the website I don't
understand their download driver area..not very user friendly..it recommends
drivers, but then warns you it might not be the right driver..do you know
where the motherboard drivers might be ,,,there were a few recovery discs and
they are the same way...very vague...sorry to be so unknowlegable..a new
problem too..tried to defrag as it was majorly fragmented...it did something
very weird and went to the black screen that said boot from disc...when I
booted the xp disc...ran the drives..hit r for repair, it said it couln't do
it b/c no hard drive detected......I shut it down...hit F12 on reboot, and
windows was back...I think this dumb machine is worse off than I thought???!!

What is the model number of your Dell Dimension (eg., 8250, 8300)? The
drivers that you need should have been supplied on a Drivers and Utilities
CD. Do you have that CD?
