A Dad needs advice re dloading songs

Doug Mitchell

Dear Group,

My 11 year old son has purchased a very basic MP3 portable player.

It connects directly to a computer by way of a USB port. Of course he is
anxious to download music. I need your help in recommending sites which will
allow for an easy dloading of songs to such an MP3 player and do not require
payment.

Thanks for your advice.

But aren't there sites where one might be encouraged to dload songs/music
because either the artists wishes to be more well known or the music is much
older and not so much in demand?

Dear Group,
Dad, downloading songs for "free" is both illegal and immoral. Allowing
your son to use these P2P programs puts you in the place of approving
software piracy.

These songs are NOT "free". Artists own the rights to their own music, and
should be paid a royalty for each song. Stealing music via the Internet is
stealing food right out of their children's mouth.

Instead, use one of the legal music services. Songs are usually only $.99
per copy, and in most cases, albums are about $9.99. Your conscience will
be clearer, you will sleep better at night, and you won't be a bad example
to your children, who need a moral compass in these evil days.

Does he like "commercial hard rock" if so, then here's an entire album's worth
of "free and legal" MP3s that I recorded back in '95.

That's what I was hoping to hear. He just wants to try out his machine by
dloading anything. Maybe later he will be interested enough to purchase
songs he really wants.

Thanks for the post.

Donald, you misunderstand. In an earlier post in the *same* thread I stated:

"But aren't there sites where one might be encouraged to dload songs/music
because either the artists wishes to be more well known or the music is much
older and not so much in demand?"

The implication was that we wished to first try out the capabilities of his
simple MP3 player by dloading any music which was *permitted* to be dloaded
for free. And because we had never dloaded music before we asked about this
possibility. Our post was made without any nefarious intentions but made
because of our inexperience with the medium. Don't forget that people may
post to a newsgroup because they want to know more about sometimes the very
basics.

I do apologize for taking a harsh stand. I guess I misunderstood the
implications of your post.

Normally, I read threads from the newest to the oldest, and post in the same
order. I didnt see your earlier post, and jumped to conclusions. Again,
please forgive me if I have offended you.

You're welcome. If you have any problems, all of the files are on my site as
well.
P.S. It looks like Astryd Lypp will be making a comeback of sorts in 2004.
Todd, Forrest and Eric are working on some new songs. I will be the engineer as
well as co-producer. :)

Most sites now charge per download (e.g., emusic.com,
musicmatch.com, musicnow.com). A free method would be to
rip songs from CDs he already owns using WMP9. You set
the Tools / Options / Copy Music (tab) to MPEG Layer-3
(MP3)and then copy CD tracks. The resulting file(s) are
MP3 format and can be copied to the MP3 player.

Besides, their are plenty of free mp3's available. If you go to most band's
web sites you will find free samples of there work. I can post more if you
need.

There are a few good programs (instead of web sites) that I know of. Kazaa Lite K++ is one of them, Limewire and Ares Galaxy. They are all p2p programs.
