A 1.2 GB PST file shows no data

Problem - A reattached PST file shows 0KB data.

Specifics:
I did a wipe and reinstall of a WinXP with Office XP Standard. After the
reinstall I restored all files from a backup, however the archive.pst was
apparently corrupt (1.2 GB before and after). I did a scanpst.exe on the
file and it reported 2 errors. I told it to repair. Now I have an
archive.bak and a new archive.pst file. I ran the scanpst again, and this
time it shows 4 folders, no errors. I open it in Outlook XP and all I get is
an empty deleted items folder and when I click on properties, it is telling
me the file has 0KB while Windows Explorer sees it as a 1.22 GB file. I set
up a different profile and attached the pst file to that profile - same
results. I try it on a different machine running Outlook 2003 - same
results. Scanpst sees 4 folders, Outlook only sees 1.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your tip. I had already tried scanpst.exe. I had not tried
the hex editing. Tried it now - no luck. I tried a bunch of demo pst
recovery programs. The only one that was able to retrieve e-mails was
"recovery for outlook 1.5" just FYI.
