_private, _fpclass, _etc, folders?

I am confused by these different folders showing in "My Websites"
folder. I have searched for some time to find an explanation webpage.
I bought the big FP 2003 Inside Out book by Jim Buyens but I don't quite
understand some things.

It says that the _private folder will contain hit counter data, among
other things, if I add a hit counter. Does FP send the data to the
_private folder?

I understand that applets are stored in the _fpclass folder. FP stores
applets automatically in the folder? I don't have to do anything?

Lastly, I wonder why I have both an images folder and a photo gallery
folder. In the beginning I was just playing with images, then I tried
photo galleries, later I learned to swap images. I think I'm starting to
clutter up these folders with duplicate images.

Thank you for your patience and direction.

My understanding of the following elements of your query:

folders starting with an underscore ( _foldername). These should be hidden
files, and contain various data and scripts internal to the functionality of
frontpage - specifically to do with the server extensions among other things

You can store your own java applets wherever you like (usually in the same
folder as the html page that contains the applet) Frontpage uses some of its
own applets for features like hover buttons that it may store in _fpclass.

_private folder is just that - private - contains things that normally
couldn't be browseable by the general public - the folder would have certain
read/write permissions automatically set. It may contain things like the
fpcounter as you've mentioned.

Your images folder would be for image you create. The Photogallery folder I
imagine is what FP creates for its own purposes when using the photo gallery
feature.

Some files *are* duplicated but that's because FP needs them to be so - you
might see duplicates of files in folders like _vti.... etc - these are
required if you're using FP on a windows server with FP server extensions.
It's too technical for me to explain why, maybe one of the MVP's can
oblige.....

All I can say is the duplicate files have something to do with the way FP
keeps track of changed pages, broken hyperlinks and the general
manageability of the sites you create with Frontpage.
