_msdcs greyed out

Under the DNS root of our domain, the _msdcs directory is greyed out. It
hasnt always been like this.

What would cause it to be greyed out? Corruption?

No, delegation. This is default. If you notice you will see a folder called
_msdcs.domain.com under your Forward Lookup Zones. Essentially the _msdcs
zone under domain.com is being delegated to the first DC created in the
domain.
