_CorExeMain error with Service Pack 1 for Microsoft .NET

After downloading and installing Service Pack 1 for Microsoft .NET
I get the following error for my .NET app:

Could not run the given program. _CorExeMain failed

I tried to reinstall the .NET Framework but this does not seem to help.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to uninstall the Service Pack for .NET
Framework.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
