9x support reason enough for me to go nvidia and maybe via instead of ati and intel

New Ati and intel chipsets don't support windows 98se, very sad,
windows xp(bloatware, spyware, expensive) or linux (time waster) are
not options for many, kudos to nvidia for keep supporting 9x and lets
give via the benefit of the doubt, I hope that new via chipsets like
kt890 support at least 98se.

wierd, i agree - but 98se is oldassed and is completely usurped in every
regards by xp and 2k - 2k being the preferred of those two. As primarily a
gaming card, the newer ATI offerings have no business being on old os's such
as 98se anyway. Linux servers less so, but win9x? niet. Moving with the
times we go.

Spyware? How on Earth did you come to that conclusion? There's the error
reporting, yes, but that can be easily disabled. Further more, Windows XP
runs like a charm. While I had many crashed with 98SE, I've yet to
experience a real crash with XP (up until now I've only seen some programs
crash, but not the OS itself).
I hope that new via chipsets like
kt890 support at least 98se.

At a given point you'll *have* to switch to a newer OS... at some point in
the future, no-one will support an old OS like 98SE anymore.

Or do as I do - if you want to keep a 98SE box going, don't insist on
running it with all the latest bleeding edge kit.

Arnold,,, get xp lad.

Theres no bloatware or spyware in XP, only in the programs you are using.

Winxp is miles better than 9x. It never crashes (linux does)

But you have to be very careful when installing XP, leaving the OS
exposed to the ravages of the internet for more than 5 mins will make it
catch something nasty.
And of course, downloading the service pack(s) if you don't have it on
disk will take longer than that.

Win98 is inherently less susceptable.

I'm hanging onto Win98 here, but only until my next hardware upgrade.

I suggest you read the original post. The subject here is *motherboard*
chipset drivers. In the case of ATi, that would imply IGP/IXP.

I was talking about the ati radeon x800/x600/x300 series videocard
chipsets and the intel 915 motherboard chipset which don't support
windows 98se.

That's not surprising at all....given the fact that 98Se is FIVE YEARS old
os (or somewhere around there), which is in computer terms ancient history.
It's time to move on...

Psssssssssssssssssssssst, DOS is RIP, having being slaughtered by the NT
kernal!

Spyware, Win 9X has just as much risk of catching something nasty.
Especialy more so in the future, when support is dropped for it.

Bloatware, learn to turn off those features you don't wish to run.
From experiance in the past, Windows NT 4 was actualy faster than
Windows 9X without the bloatware (services) running many games (Counter
Strike/HL). But then that could have been because more care was taken
with NT drivers back then, BTW this was with nVidia video cards.

Cost, if you take inflation into account, Win XP is actualy cheaper.
Also factor in costs for after installed support (if your a companys or
organization etc), and it is a lot cheaper to support. If I was
administrating I would rather 5000 clients running Win 2000, Win XP or
even any Mac OS, than Windows 9X anyday!

RIP DOS - you don't have my sympathy (8*

98SE is still used on a tremendous number of computers, close to half of
the entire installed base. And some people have software that won't run

I'm sure it is still widely used. But a PC with X?00 series graphics card or
intel 915 chipset is more then capable of running 2K/XP...There really is no
sensible reason not to upgrade (other then possible cost), given the much
much higher overall security/performance provided by the NT kernel. And the
fact that even MS itself is dropping support for 9X (or have they done so
already).

Catalyst 4.7 is now available for Win9x/ME. It appears ATi is not dropping
drivers for Win9x altogether, just not releasing them as often as XP
drivers. nVidia has been doing the same for the last year or so.

We will see about this when the game gets released, whether it'll be just
some OS check in the installer or an actual functionality that is missing in
Win9x. The leaked alpha worked fine on my machine.
