9800 pro to a x800 xl

Would I gain much going from a non OC 9800 pro with 128 megs of ram to an X
800 XL 256 meg AGP card? I will be pairing it with an Athlon xp3000+ chip
and 1 gig of memory. Best Buy and Comp USA have the 800 on sale this week
for only $249.

That's the exact upgrade I just recently made. It's noticeably faster
but not blazingly so. But I play a lot of flight sims where the games
tend to be more cpu bound than video card dependent so I may not
notice the improvement as much as a FPS fan might.

I just upgraded from the ATI 9800 pro to the ATI X800 XL, 2 days ago! Best
Buy Canada also had it on sale ($349 CDN) and I couldn't
resist. I ran a few benchmarks before and after the upgrade.

HL2/CSS Stress Test
9800pro: 98 fps (1024 x 768 - no AA - no AF)
X800XL: 106 fps (1280 x 1024 - 2x AA - 2x AF)

Doom3 Timedemo
9800pro: 52 fps (1024 x 768 - no AA - no AF)
X800XL: 48 fps (1280 x 1024 - 2x AA - 2x AF)

3DMark 2003
9800pro: 5818
X800XL: 10382

3DMark 2005
9800pro: 2273
X800XL: 4853

Driver info:
- Catalyst 5.6 w/ CCC
- all settings best performance
- Catalyst AI set to advanced

Machine specs:
- P4 3.0E
- 2 X 512MB Corsair Value Select
- ASUS P4P800 SE
- ATI X800XL
- Soundblaster Audigy 2

Above and beyond those benchmarks, I can hold 50+ FPS in BF2, running at
1280x1024, high detail, no AA and no AF.

In short, I'm quite satisfied with the X800XL, especially at the price I
paid. For a lot less money, the XL holds its own up against an nVidia
6800gt.

I upgraded awhile back .. what i noticed is that I am now playing games at
higher resolution now and more eyecandy. The 9800 Pro is still a good card
... the X800XL is very good.
