9600 Pro New MMC Install Hangs

I'm running:
P4 - 2.6 Hyperthread on
WinXP SP1

Prior to install of latest drivers, I remove all ATI software using the
cat-uninstaler utility.

9600 Pro - latest drivers avail as of 9/5/04, full package install
wxp-w2k-CCC-9-042-etc...

I can install the WDAC
I can install the DVD Driver
When I try to install the Multimedia Center, the install runs and runs
and runs and never completes. It sits there consuming about 50% of the
CPU. Same thing for the Remote Wonder II.

Anyone else have this problem?

I've seen that problem off and on. Almost always it
has been solved by replacing the CDROM drive. I think
some of the older CD drives have BIOSes that are
incompatible with XP. I've tried upgrading the BIOSes
but most of the time the upgrade fails, and the drive
dissappears forever. They don't cost enought to fight
with, so I just replace them. If you have another "straight"
CDROM drive sitting around, try it. I have made it a
policy to stick with the newer Plextors 48 - 52x except
I think the Mitsumi DVDs are pretty stable .. so far.

Well this is a fairly new DVD and I'm installing not from CD but from
downloads from their website. I'm thinking I may be in store for a
re-install of WinXP to fix this.
