In fish shoot the aim is simple, and fairly implicit in the title, you
shoot fish. You also get to shoot bubbles but I thought 'Fish and a few
bubbles shoot' wouldn't be as catchy a title, though 'Aqua shoot' would
have been suitable. Anyway, we're straying from the point.
You have 30 seconds to shoot as many fish (or bubbles) as you can.
Different fish five different points, and the more points the better
you are doing. Also, shooting special red flashing bubbles (They're a
well know phenomena honest!) will give you that vital extra time under
water.

Space battle has three modes of play, shields, spacecraft and a lot of
strange things which are supposed to be planets but resemble
radioactive biscuits, or cookies to the Americans. (Waves hello to any
Americans reading) The game is fast paced and even gets more difficult
as you become better. There are even a few surprises for those who
survive for a long time.
Ultimately your aim is to survive as long as possible, racking up
points be shooting stuff. Other modes include two play cooperative,
which in true Sesame Street style puts the two of you side by side to
get the job done. But perhaps the most fun can be had in the VS mode,
in which two of you may be put head to head in an arena.

specifically for slow computers and improves the graphics in a few
places.

Name Gen is a small utility which randomly generates a name from a
database of first names and surnames. Originally it was created to help
protect against those moments of writers block when you suddenly find
yourself unable to think of a name. However in development I found it
strangely addictive, and found myself sat there trying to produce
strange names, or famous people. It sounds absolutely boring and
completely useless but it has the strange ability to actually engross
you in something simple.
Name Gen received a recommendation from lockergnome, which said the
following '{Generate a name} So, I was out with my pals Hugo Kent and
Dave Sutherland the other day, and I says to Hugo, I says... wait, I
don't know anyone with those names, it must have been this crazy name
generator I found. Just click on the button and see a name. If you'd
like, you can add some of your own names to the list. If you're
wondering what the point is, there is no specific point. It's fun to
play around with, but you could also use it to come up with names if
you're writing a story. Some programs run on your own imagination. "It

is even better, although the original is still available for the
purists. As well as retaining all the functionality of the original
'Name Gen', 'Name Gen 2' also allows you to generate user-names or
handles. I wasn't entirely sure on the purpose of this addition yet
went by the assumption that I had similar feelings when creating the
original 'Name Gen' and that it may come in use when choosing a name in
a chat room or for an E-mail. 'Name Gen 2' also includes a larger
database of names that the original, making possibly a total of over
sixty thousand possible names.

Rockin' Alien is a simple CD player though with one important
difference. The little alien guy dances. Well it's been done before I
know, but this was a very early game which has since been improved upon
slightly. (Update: Recently I had a request to include Rockin' Alien on
a freeware CD. I am wondering why they chose my least interesting piece
of software.) Rockin' Alien has now been abandoned by myself and has
thus been opened up, all graphics and sounds have been released in the
public domain, as has the .gam file, which may now be freely opened in
'The Games Factory.'

accompanied by some cool spiny stars. During testing I found it works
especially well with 'It's a kind of magic' from Queen.

Metry is my personal favourite. The game is a platform game in which
you control a space hopper called Metry. The aim of each level is to
collect gems and reach the portal which will carry Metry to the next
level. Points are awarded for completing a level, collecting gems and
for any time remaining when you reach the level exit. The idea is
simple but with a time limit, disappearing blocks, spikes, acid and
fire the whole thing starts to sound a little more difficult. There are
fifteen levels in total, including a tutorial and bonus level. A
practice mode allows you to improve your skills without the worry of
time and a high score table keeps track of your progress.
'Say What?' has been released under beta as I don't believe it is
polished enough to deserve a freeware release. The program resembles
one of those games which you used to play as a child (Or still do if
you are still a child or just young at heart) where you would pass
round a piece of paper writing down words to build up a story. Only
this time it is digitised and you don't need a pen or paper. It can be
hideously funny, or rather damp depending on the words and names you
choose, producing either gems of a story or something so vulgar and
corrupt you can't look at a banana the same way in weeks. This version
contains three stories, although has the ability for you to add your
own or to download more from this website as they become available. The
program also has facilities to randomly select words from an easily
extendable database and a simple story management screen.

The problem with trying to describe an abstract game is that it doesn't
immediately present an analogy for it cannot be called a driving game,
a football game or even a shooting game. It has no basis in real life.
Occasionally they may be referred to as puzzle games though more often
than not (Okay, not strictly true. About 30% of the time) the analogy
given is that of another abstract concept, 'Tetris like' games. Tetris
was one of those games which managed to escape the boundaries of the
normal gaming bubble and managed to establish itself as as small part
of the global consciousness. Cyclic could be described as a 'Tetris
like' game, although it bares more similarity to Tetris' Sega Game Gear
competitor, Columns. During the game the spheres cycle round the three
rings and the aim is to clear as many as you can to make room for the
new spheres entering. Spheres may be cleared by lining up three or more
of the same colour and in doing so you increase your score. Like most
'Tetris like' games, Cyclic aims to be simple and addictive. Whether it
enters the reign of games which achieve this I cannot say, yet I hope
it makes a good attempt and that It gets at least one person hooked.
