8500 does not like motherboard

How can I be down

I have an ECS K7VTA3 V8.0 that will not boot with my Radeon 8500 128 (
retail box ) . It will boot with an old Voodoo3 3000. So I know the AGP slot
works. Without spending $400 on a 9800xt, what card should I upgrade to?

PC specs
AMD barton 2600+
1gb PC 3200 400mhz
2 36gb SCSI seagate cheetah raid 0
Adaptec AAA-131U2W raid controller
Adaptec 29160 running 4 external 18gb drives
SCSI DVD player
SCSI Yamaha Burner
I am using the on board NIC and sound

In what way doesn't it boot ?

Do you get a POST screen or does it Blue Screen or Hang before the OS is
loaded.

Have you tried the card without any other cards installed to ensure that
there isn't a conflict ?

It boots other AGP cards, just not the Radeon 8500. When I put the 8500 back
in my old system it works fine. I have the latest bios for the motherboard.
The board and the video card just seem to not like each other

That board suffers from an underpowered AGP lot. Best advise for
compatibility compared to the 8500 is to use a GF3.

Well if you can't even respond to my questions on what your syptoms are then
good luck in finding a solution.

No one can help without knowing even the basic of details.

ECS motherboards are notorious for this, I've built several computers using
their mainboards. The trick is that you have to make sure the vidcard is
firmly pressed into the AGP slot (extremely finicky). Also make sure that
there is nothing in the PCI slot next to the vidcard.

I'll try that and let everybody know

Results are in. Doesn't matter what PCI slot I put the SCSI Raid controller
in, it still does not like my AGP. Time to buy an ASUS

Does the 8500 need the extra power cord hooked up to it like my 9500 pro
does? I plug it in like a normal AGP card, but it requires on additional
power input. It is like the type that plugs into your 1.44 floppy drive.
Mine plugs in directly to the card. Otherwise, I got the same results as
you. I was rebuilding and forgot to plug it in once. I too had a Voodoo
card or two and some other ATI cards. None of them used the connection Im
talking about. You may be experiencing the same.

Hope it helps,
SL

Does that mb support 1.5v video cards? Voodoo3 is a 3.3v card and may
be why it works and the 8500 doesn't. I think K7 mb's support 1.5v so
that's probably not it. Just an outside chance.

8500 does not require extra power of any kind.

A Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2
nForce2 Ultra400 chipset motherboard

fixed the problem and I got a much better board. The ECS motherboard
loves my old Athlon 800 so everything is happy now
