61883 Device Failure

I get a "61883" device failure whenever I try to connect my mini-DV camcorder
to my HP Athlon desktop.
Connecting the same camcorder to my HP laptop with the same cable works
flawlessly.
I have tried to look for a solution on the internet but all answers point to
a WinME/98/Win2000 system.
Thanks

Sorry my earlier post was not more descriptive about the errant system:
HP Athlon 3000+
1GB RAM
Windows XP SP2 with latest security upgrades.
VIA 1394 drivers.
Samsung SCD27 miniDV camcorder
Neither fron or back FireWire ports work. Every other port (USB, etc., in
the system works).
Thanks
John
PS I see many gripes about the same issue: Is there a hotfix.

Thanks Cari:
I downloaded the file, installed it & restarted XP but no success.
Any more insights?
John
PS. Went to your website and saw your mug collection. Like you I collect
them but actually go for the really ugly, or unsual logos. I even have a
Webvan mug!

One more suggestion.. right click My Network Places and select Properties.
If you have a 1394 connection listed here, right click and disable it. You
can obviously network via firewire but most folks don't. And it can cause a
problem with capture if enabled.

Hi Cari,
This is Treeman. And as you know I'm always interested in firewire
issues. I often wondered why MS locked down 1394 and set it to a
networking protocol. If not many users don't network using firewire,
but use it instead for DV cameras & external drives, I'm curious. Would
your above tweak knock out firewire connectivity completly, or allow
pass through for firewire devices.
Thanks,
Treeman
