550 Relaying Denied

I'm having a problem sending mail in Outlook 2002. When I hit Send/Receive
my outgoing emails get returned to my inbox from "System Administrator" with
the subject line of "Undeliverable: [my original subject line]". The error
in the message says "550 Relaying Denied: You are not authorized to send
email through this server".

I have only one account set up, and it's a POP3/SMTP account. I've been in
contact with my domain administrator and haven't been able to figure out the
solution to this error yet. He has explained that the cause of the error is
that when the outgoing emails are sent, the mail server hasn't authorized my
IP address to send e-mails yet. But once I finish the receiving part of
Send/Receive I have been authenticated and am thus able to resend the emails
that got dumped into my inbox. I've tried all three options on the
"Outgoing Server" tab of the account dialog. Didn't help. Suggestions?

Need to contact the administrator of the mail server.

I can't tell from the info you provide if this mail server is run inside
your organisation, or outside commercial ISP. If the latter, this error
will occur for some ISP's when you try to send mail via the ISP's mail
server but you aren't logged into that ISP's internet service. For
example sending mail via your private home ISP while you are at work
using the corporate network. For securiyt, ISP's often (almost always)
don't allow access to SMTP mail servers from outside their network.

OL2003 has a specific option for logging onto POP3 server before sending
SMTP mail.

This mail server is not part of an organisation. I've been in contact with
the mail server administrator. We can't figure out why, even though I have
the "Log on to incoming mail server before sending mail" radio button
selected, it still rejects my emails the first time. Once Outlook2002 logs
in and gets the POP3 mail, I can send mail fine. But because I'm a dial-up
user and all my emails are queued offline and there's no way to hit "receive
only", then Outlook forces me to send the emails, have them rejected into my
inbox, and then resend them again. It's quite a headache. What are some
other details that I could give you to help clarify this problem?

You probably need to authenticate to your outgoing server. In your mail
account, click "More Settings...", then go to the "Outgoing Server" tab.

solutions to this problem and not been able to find anything thus far, which
is why I'm posting the problem here.

Missed the part about trying all three possible settings for
authentication... You say that if you actually complete the receive portion
of a send/receive, you're able to send? Or is that just what your domain
administrator said, and not your experience?

If the "log into the incoming mail server before sending" doesn't work, the
only thing I can think of is that your mail server requires you to actually
download messages before you're allowed to send, instead of the usual
requirement of just logging in. I've never heard of a server with such a
requirement before - that's forcing you to potentially have to download
several megabytes of mail before you can send a short note, which is really
wacky. Outlook does not have an option to deal with such a server.

Could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment)
after you've hit this problem? I'd like to see just what's going on...

Do you folks control your own server, or is it outsourced? If the problem
is as it sounds, your only option is to see if you can get the configuration
of the server changed to authenticate you with a login rather than requiring
a download.

I can see no difference as far as Outlook is concerned between the success
and failure cases in that log. In both cases, Outlook successfully
authenticated to the server, and in both cases there were no messages to
download, so obviously downloading a message isn't the criterion. I think
that this is a server issue, rather than something that can be dealt with in
Outlook. The only thing I can think of is that it takes some period of time
for the SMTP process on the server to become aware of the successful
authentication to the POP3 server, so the first time you try to send (right
after logging on to POP3) your IP address is not yet authenticated as far as
the SMTP server is concerned. By the time you send the second time, that
information has finally made it to the SMTP server and things work. Have
your friend see if he can do anything on the server side.

I've been reading over these emails ---trying to make sense of this sudden problem that has been occuring with my outlook. Same symptoms -- however I am working from a home computer - simply using adelphia, veriozon, and hotmail accounts. this problems began after I switched to my DSL through verizon - from cable modem (adelphia) I am confused.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I just change my DSL to a T1 line and now i am getting a cant send e-mail from outlook that reads

550 relaying mail to server is not allowed

but It only happens in outlook
the other e-mail system we used in mac mail
