48bit LBA addressing in XP

According to the article below you need version 5.1.2600.1135 of
atapi.sys installed on your system and the EnableBigLBA key set to use
use HDD over 137Gb.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013

However on my system with XP Pro SP1a installed the version number is
5.1.2600.1106 and the registry setting isnt there, yet I'm running a
200Gb drive with no problems at all.

How come it working and how come SP1a didnt install the updated driver?

Is there anyway to slipstream the hotfix into the install files (like
you can do with SP1 and most M$ updates) so I can create a bootable
install CD?

Did you until now use the area after 128 GB?

As soon as Windows tries to write to the area after the 128Gb mark,
it'll wrap around and scribble all over the beginning of the disk.
Say bye bye to your data.

Oh? Where does it say that?

SP1 doesn't need EnableBigLba value. To be able to boot from such disk, BIOS
also should support 48 bits.
Only pre-SP1 hotfix needed it.
Make sure, though, to have a XP CD with SP1 "slipstreamed" (merged), in case
if you ever need to do refresh (repair) install.

Thats not what that MSKB listed below says. It says quite explicitly that

If Atapi.sys is not version 5.1.2600.1135
(or version 5.1.2600.1152 for Windows XP 64-Bit Edition),
obtain and install the hotfix described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 331958.

Perhaps you are using the chipset maker's (i.e. non-microsoft) driver?

Yes I have, the drive has about 150GB of data on it, most of it large
backup images (5-20GB) which verify and restore without a glitch.

No sign of it so far. As stated in other reply the disk is nearly full
and data is verified fine.

Thats a pretty decent test of that wrap around possibility.

Looks like that MSKB article you cited is just badly written and that
what gets installed by SP1a works fine even tho the version number
for atapi.sys doesnt match what that article says is required.

Also of note is the reference to KB331958 that says in part
quote
a.. Your computer may restart instead of resuming from hibernation.
b.. You may experience hard disk corruption when your computer enters
either standby or hibernation.
c.. You may experience hard disk corruption when Windows XP writes a
memory dump file as a result of an unrecoverable Windows error (or Stop
error)"
end quote

I also have a large disk and the old version of the sys file(s) XP Pro SP2
but have updated "just incase"

Yes, its pretty easy to slipstream anything like that.
