401 Unauthorized Question Again

Hello,

When trying to access my router configuration page using IE6 I get:

401 Unauthorized
Access to this resource is denied; your client has not supplied the correct
authentication.

This problem showed up after I installed SP2 and used Wireless Network
Configuration Wizard. If I use Netscape 7 or Opera I can access
routerlogin.net, but
Internet Explorer gives the error above.

Does anyone know why only I.E. has this problem?
Can I.E. be fixed so it will access that URL?

tools>internet options>security.

Now in theory I guess this should be your Intranet zone but you could check
Internet too...

Select the zone then custom button. At the bottom of settings check the
option that says Prompt for user name and password and see if that helps.

I've found these settings a bit confusing sometimes so worth a try at least.

Charlie,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It was actually located in the Trusted Zone
where the problem was found. It had been set to "Automatically logon with
current username and password".

You are the savior of my sanity. I had tried everything I knew short of
uninstalling SP2 along with IE and re-installing everything again. You have
saved me so much grief and headache. I really appreciate how you have helped
me :)

Great, pleased to have at least planted the idea. To be honest these zones
don't always seem obvious and frankly most folks don't use them properly
anyway, despite the fact that they are a perfectly logical idea :)

I found a useful utility called IEZE - IE Zone Editor which allows you to
look at the Local Computer Zone (It's there but invisible) and even create
your own zones but I went to install it earlier on this machine (Now W2003
Server) and it fell over so I dunno what went wrong there... I am pretty
sure it worked on XP though. If I see the author around I will ask if he
plans to update it... it's on a Tripod personal site so the popups are
annoying anyways :)

Charlie,

The IEZE sounds very interesting. And this thing about the Local Computer
Zone being there but invisible really has my curiosity peaked. Before today
I never heard of such a thing so i'm going to search for IEZE and check out
this invisible zone.

Thanks for passing along that valuable info Charlie. I bet there are many
other power users out there who also have no knowledge about this. This
sounds like it's gonna be fun :)

For some reason I have 2 versions of this but the later version is not on
his website so I wrote the author asking why, I believe the version I have
which does work on W2003 is written in assembler (it's 20k not 430k) and I
think that is slightly different so if you want to simply "Reply" and put
[personal] (including brackets) in the subject I will let you know what he
says.

Charlie,

I found a couple of articles that explain the different zones and how to
configure them. I haven't had enough time to really explore these in detail.
I did however try getting the Computer Zone icon to show up so I could edit
it but it doesn't seem to work with SP2 installed. The Microsoft KB article
is more indepth so I may need to start adding values in the Flags section.

OOps, I meant reply by email if you like and include [personal] to avoid the
spam filter :) Oh well.

And yes the second link should provide at least one answer, how to access
that zone.

My Computer zone isn't included in IE in WinXP SP2.

<QP>
You will note that the LMZ [Local Machine Zone] (also known as 'My Computer'
zone) does not appear in the list of available security zones. Microsoft has
hidden this zone by default to ensure that its settings are not accidentally
changed. For example, we do not want Web sites to be added to the LMZ by
accident or by a hostile Web site, because it would give that page almost
complete freedom to run anything it wants.

Quite so, the purpose of the registry change is to make it re-appear.

Sorry the thread got renamed but we were discussing a utility that can
actually create zones and I have two versions, one of which didn't work on
W2003 but both of which worked on XP SP2. (Relying on memory here so that's
not gospel :)

I was trying to check with the author to see if he was going to include the
newer "Working" one on his website any time soon or if I could send a copy
to our friend here without upsetting anyone :)
