4 Prompts New Hardware Wizard - Need New Ideas

Summary:
1)swapped out slave drive on IDE #2 controller from 80 to 200gig by Seagate
(N: Drive) / note: master is HP DVD-RW (O: drive).
2)reconfigured these two IDE 2 drives to Cable Select on same above IDE #2
vs. Master /Slave as 200 gig would not be reocgnized in BIOS - BIOS now OK.
3)added Ipod 160 gig to configuration (front USB 2.0) (P: Drive)
4)swapped out 80 gig IDE within HD enclosure to a 120 gig via USB port
(front USB 2.0 - Q: Drive)

When booting, Xp SP2 (all latest updates except IE 7), New Hardware Wizard
prompts to install drivers for N drive and Q drive - of course these
manufacturers don't have specific drivers. I cancel both prompts and drives
work well as they are and show up in Disk management and also Device manager
without conflict
Plug in Ipod, same occurance, NHW pops up and no drivers from Apple, click
Cancel and Ipod shows up in Disk Drive section of Device manager without
conflict.

Finally, I turn on external HD enclosure, same NHW prompt, I cancel and
drive shows up in Disk management and device manager without conflict. All
work well but the prompts are continuous after each boot up or device plug in
/ turn on.

I have gotten and downlaoded latest chipset from Intel and isntalled - no
luck. Discovered MS article on how to suppress NHW, made reigstry entry and
no success. Apple had no suggestions. Also created a new hardware profile
after all drives are loaded and working, booted to this new hardware profile
and no success. Forced NHW on each of the 4 prompts to the INF folder and no
success. Tried changing all 4 drive letters and no success. Tried killing
Shell Hardware Notification via services.msc and no success. Ran SFC /
Scannow - no success. Right clicked on usbstor.inf and installed as well as
other usb*.inf files and installed - no success. Reviewed most other
articles in this section / threads and no success. Open to any other ideas
at all.

There are some suggestions here. I don't know how applicable they'd be
to your problem.

that would be fine if the NHW could load the proper INF to load the driver(s)
but it doesn't. perhaps if I knew which INF files load eachof these four
items that would help. Strangely, there are two other DVD/CD units which use
the Microsoft drivers without issue - no reason why on this third HP DVD/CD
device which "has been" running for close to 6 years now receives this prompt
after modifying the jumper pin. The drivers are still in the system as they
do load, just the wizard now appears each time

Paul - interesting, I had read through his page the other day and should have
scrolled down further as the web page title indicates it is for
"Troubleshooting for USB drives". After further reading and revisiting I
found the section that talks about an INF cache file as Microsoft uses cache
files in a variety of places as with Outlook. After renaming the infcache.1
to infcache.old for safety purposes vs. deleting as the article calls for, I
rebooted. The drivers need loaded automatically as I anxiously watched the
balloons in the systray appear and disappear. I was prompted each time to
"continue" as Windows had not passed it's own driver for the IDE Disk Drive
called 'Disk Drive" (strange). But all seems OK at present and no device
manager conflicts and no New Hardware Wizard prompts.

Thanks for posting this article - seems to have done the trick for now at
least - no more NHW popups!
