32 Bit or 64 Bit?

Dejola

I am seeking to download an application called Process Explorer but am
baffled by a question I must answer before doing so. I'm asked if my
Windows XP is 32 bit or 64 bit. I have no clue. Does anyone know how I
find this out?

Thanks

You will probably find that you have 32 bit ( unless you specifically asked
for a 64bit pc when you order it). But to check go to Control panel and
click on the System icon. The openning tab should show the system
information. Look for 32 bit operating system. if it say's 64 bit operating
system then you know you have a 64 bit system.

Thanks, John. I went into Control Panel > System > General Tab
I found no clue about either it being 32 or 64 bit. All I see is
System: Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 2,
Registered to (my name), and the Product ID number (It's an OEM number.
I have a Thinkpad Z61M). Below that is Lenovo, Genuine Intel (R) CPU,
T2300 @ 1.66 GHz, 1.66GHz, 504 MB RAM, Physical Address Extension.

I think I will assume, as you suggest, that I have a 32 bit system.

Thanks so much for your help.

I really think you'd know if you had 64-bit. Your wallet would be a bit
lighter, for one thing. ;-)

64 Bit operating systems only run on Intel Itanium based processors, so,
from the information you give, i think we can assume you have a 32 bit
system. If you had downloaded the 64 bit version of the software you are
after it would not install anyway on a 32 bit system.

If you have to ask, you're almost certainly running the 32-bit
version of WinXP. I'm not trying to be facetious; I'm sure you'd have
noticed paying several thousand dollars more for the Itanium or Itanium
II CPU required to run the original 64-bit version of WinXP Pro, or
whether or not you purchased a computer with an AMD Athlon64 or Intel
EM64T CPU. There are, of course, no 64-bit versions of WinXP Home, WinXP
TabletPC, or WinXP MCE. Also, because WinXPx64 is available only as an
OEM license, it doesn't come in a box.

To verify for yourself, Click Start > Run, type in "Winver" and
press <Enter>. If the resulting dialog box does not _explicitly_ state
that you have "Windows XP 64-Bit Edition" or "Windows XP Professional
x64 Edition," then you have a 32-bit OS.

That hasn't been the case for a quite a while, now. Both AMD and Intel
offer non-Itanium 64-bit processors (i.e., AMD Athlon64 or Intel EM64T
CPUs) that run the newer, non-Itanium version of WinXPx64.

Other than helping the authors of the software keep track of which
platform the utility is being used on it doesn't make a hill of beans of
difference which download you select. There is only one version and it
works on either platform.
