[2nd request] Message databases won't compress. Please, help!

Hello,

As previously stated on the 25th, whenever Windows Mail attempts to compress
the message databases, before it can complete the procedure, an error message
will appear declaring Windows Mail's inability to compress those databases,
all due to the fact either Windows Mail or some other application is usurping
control of the Windows Mail program.

Ultimately, I'm forced to close out the unfinished procedure, it then
searches for a solution to the frustrating glitch. Of course, finding none,
Vista H P meekly suggests coming here for a double-dose of knowledgeable
assistance. You now find me in dire need of said expertise. ;-)

F.Y.I., I'm running AVG's Internet Security Suite.

There are experts here. I am not one of them. I'm a self-confessed idiot.
Have you allowed AVG to usurp control of the Windows Mail program?
If you have not disabled Full e-mail protection, you gave AVG permission.
What will happen if you turn that AVG feature off? WinMail might compact.
You can find an argument for leaving that AVG feature turned off here:

Hi Michael,

I seriously doubt your claims of idiocy and wish to thank you for your
suggestion.

Unfortunately, I had already disabled "E-mail Scan", both incoming and
outgoing, with no apparent beneficial effect. Windows Mail still remains
unable to complete the database compression.

Perhaps there is no solution and I am condemned to forever own the most
bloated mail/messages database in the known free world...sigh.

Anyway, I'll continue to monitor this thread and hope and hope and hope...
;-)

Thanks again,

Another 'extreme' option is upgrading to Windows Live Mail.
It does a good job importing the wanted messages while leaving
the corrupt stuff behind.

I didn't like Vita's disimproved minesweeper and solitaire games. What I did
about my liking for the chess playing program was to install Fritz 10 on XP.
I understand that my resistance to Vista is futile - it's a temporary solution.

The community of users that grew up around Outlook Express hasn't matured
yet for Windows Mail. OE always needed a certain amount of adjustment from
Microsoft defaults to be reliable. Since these have been fairly, if not completely,
worked out for OE, if one sticks with XP all of those fixes should be applied:

Steve Cochran's site includes support for WinMail. Tom Koch links to it:

If one has Vista, WinMail could be kind of kicked into line. Or, try out
Thunderbird, Eudora, the Windows Live Mail beta, MSO Outlook, etc.

The radical solution is to move from Windows to *nix. Several posters in the
vista.general newsgroup are beating the drum for Ubuntu. Apple offers BSD
based Mac OS-X, but that requires a cash blow out for their equipment.

Hello Michael,

I would be more than happy to change from AVG to Avast if it weren't for the
fact I just purchaced a 2 year/3 machine "AVG Internet Security" package from
Grisoft. Silly me, I believed their claims of Vista compatibility. I do
have three computers and only the Vista machine is having any problems with
AVG. Vista remains, more or less, a mystery to me. I only wish I understood
its inner workings a tenth as well as I do XP. Still, time and investigative
persistance will eventually find a cure. Thank you again for your kind
assistance, my friend.
