2nd Matxtor SATA drive won't complete formatting

I've got a AMD athalon64 3200+ with a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
motherboard, 1 gig of ram, and a maxtor 6B200S0 sata drive. Everything
works fine.

I tried adding a new Maxtor Diamond Max 6V250F0 sata drive and I
cannot get it to complete formatting.

I've tried via the XP Storage management system and it goes right to
100% and then says "windows could not complete formatting"
In the computer management window it sees the 2nd drive and has
assigned it a drive letter, and says its healthy ,but under "file
system" it is blank.

I tried using Maxtors Maxblast software but have the same problem,
although it seems to finish its format attempt in about 5 minutes
compared to windows 30 minutes which can't be right?

With both methods as soon as they finish, task manager shows that
"system idol" is bouncing between 70% and 95% causing the system to
run very slowly even though there are no other apps running. When I
reboot its back to normal.

I've done a virus scan and tried all of the above with Norton turned
off, still no luck.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Try jumpering the drive to 1.5G mode, that
motherboard doesnt support the 3G mode.

Thanks for the reply.

I changed the jumper but still have the same problem. I even tried to
partition it to see if I could at least format a smaller section, but
it won't do the partition without an error message.

See what PowerMax has to say about the drive.

If it claims its fine, ring Maxtor and see what they have to say about it.
Frustrating.

True.
