2D Quality on a HDTV with component cables Question

How is the 2D desktop quality and video playback quality from a Radeon 8500
or a newer 9600 video card with DVI to Component adapter onto a 36" Sony XBR
HDTV.

I want to build a multimedia PC. I already have an XP2400+, an Epox nForce2
motherboard with 512MB of DDR and a 250GB Hard Drive for it. I have a choice
of a few used Radeon cards, I may also have a 9700Pro to choose from. I don't
expect to game from it just use it for music and maybe some video.

It should be very good, my 27" Zenith has both VGA and component inputs and
the desktop looks excellent with either connector from my AIW 9700 BUT keep
in mind although your Sony supposedly accepts 720P signals I believe that it
upscales them to 1080i, basically what that means is your choices may well
be limited to something like 640x480, 856x480 Progressive and 1920x1080
interlaced, at least that how it is with mine, the picture is excellent but
Windows hates anything below 800x600 so you might open a control panel for
say your video card at 856x480 and find it is so large you can't click on
all the buttons to make a change, same for many apps too, at 1920x1080
(interlaced) even with a 36"" screen it will be hard to read due to the dot
pitch of the TV. You will probably need Powerstrip to get some custom
resolutions to work but it is well worth it, no HTPC should exist without
that app. You can get good advice on what you want to do on the Forums at
avsforum.com or the forums at HTPC news. As far as I know no CRT does true
720P which would be the best for PC playback, one thing I do is I also have
my HTPC connected via S-video and I can switch to S-video for when I need
800x600 or 1024x768 for some games or to adjust things.

What are you on Chris ???

My Toshibia Crt 86cm does 720p and 1080i. Running at 1088 by 612 now.

Uninformed Boobs.
