2003 Server never finishes boot up sequence

I know this is a 2000 forum, but I couldn't find one for server 2003.
Here is the problem:
This is a small dental office with about 8 computers. The server is Windows
2003 with AD installed. After performing an update of their practice
software, I noticed that Windows updates were downloaded and installed. Since
the server had not been shut down for quite some time, I thought a reboot
might be in order. Not that it was absolutely needed, but since there was no
critical need for the server at the moment, I figgured not a bad idea.

Anyway, after rebooting, the server gets to the screen "Applying Computer
Settings" and just sits there. The end users are able to log in from
workstations and everything appears to work fine, I just can't log in to the
server console itself. If I start up in safe mode, there is nothing of
significance in the event viewer. If I try to start with "last known good
configuration", it hangs in the same spot.

Any suggestions as to how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Hello there,
Well you can always go into safe mode and uninstall the updates...or even
better revert back to a restore point. But that is the easy way out...

All updates your recieved should be listed in your %SystemRoot% as a text
file something like KBnonsense.txt You can maybe audit the trail of updates
you recieved. Although youd have to be on the server for this so Remote
Desktop-In unless you have disabled that which I believe you can Enable in
Safe-Mode.

The event viewer and error logs should provide a clue to what services were
at least started towards the end of the boot process...dont you think? I mean
maybe there are no errors but it should list what has started.
