2003 install on a 2000 domain

I will be installing a Win2003 server on my 2000 SP4 domain running AD, DNS, and DHCP. I would like to add the 2003 server as a second DC without DHCP (I only have 20 clients). I have read that I need to run the tools located on the 2003 server CD on the 2000 machine and to make sure the 2000 machine has at SP2. Other than these 2 requirements, what other precautions or actions do I need to do before I add this machine to my network

What would be the steps to add the 2003 machine as a second DC? Just run DCPROMO and insert the domain info. and the such

I have never promoted a server before nonetheless added a 2nd DC. Any advice/articles/tools/support would be appreciated

Adding a W2K3 DC into a W2K domain is slightly more involved than simply
DCPromo'ing it.

Can I get a small step by step on how to do this? Do I put the 2003 server on the network then run Adprep.exe, forest prep, domian prep, on the 2000 server them run dcpromo on the 2003 server? I'm not running Exchange. Also, all my clients are running XP.

I also know that the server needs to point to itself first for DNS then the other DC as secondary DNS.

I don't know if this helps, but I'm not upgrading a server from 2000 to 2003. I'm adding a 2003 server to my forest and want it to be a DC along with my 2000 server

Your W2K3 server can be a member server in the 2000 domain.

The basic steps:
Then run ADREP /FORESTPREP
Then run ADREP /DOMAINPREP
Then DCPromo the W2K3 server to a domain controller.

Be warned though - this is not something to undertake lightly. There is no
idiot's guide because this is not something an idiot should be doing. Its
fairly straightforward but if something goes wrong you can have serious
problems.

Research it a bit more, understand the steps involved then proceed.

I am going to put my 2003 server on the network as a member server firstly because it is going to store my new ERP system we are implementing. However, I also need it be a DC because I only have 1 DC on my network at this time. I figure since I have the resources, why not? (Dell Xeon Duel P4 2Ghz with 1gig ram

I actually read the 'manual' that came with Win2003 server and it explains in some detail and some resources on the net as what to do so have a pretty good understanding. I'm going to try to do this in a test environment first just to make sure. Another thing I need to do is upgrade 2 9x machines to XP and my 2 NT member servers to 2000 server as well

But, do I need to do anything to the NT member servers? I'm assuming they just need to have the latest patches/hotfixes

If your NT4 servers & workstations are at Service Pack 6a you should be
fine.

NT4 SP6 was quickly updated by MS to SP6a; the machines will only indicate
SP6 even if they have 6a installed. Start > Run > Winver.exe will show you
the details.

In any event. you need SP3 and above for NT4 to work with W2K3 - so you're
fine.
