2000 server schema master migration

I have a single domain/single AD server setup that I am
replacing the hardware and I want to migrate AD to pull in
the group policy and user accounts so I don't have to
rebuild them. What else do i need to do after I install AD
on this box and let it replicate? Migrate Schema Master,
FSMO roles, Global Catalog? I really do not want to
rebuild this domain.

Jeramy,

I would suggest that you put in a second DC. Purchase the new server.
Install WIN2000 and then run dcpromo to promote it to a DC. Make sure that
you also install DNS on it as well as make it a Global Catalog server. Make
sure that you also move DHCP to this server. Give it time to replicate...

Then, transfer all five of the FSMO roles to the 'new' DC. You can do this
either with the various MMCs or with NTDSUtil.

Once you are happy that everything is cool ( check the event logs, install
the Support Tools to use some of the tools included with them: repadmin,
replmon, dcdiag, netdiag, netdom, et al and check to make sure that
everything is in order ) move on to the next step.

Move over any applications and user folders that you might have on the 'old'
DC. Once you have tested everything and have made sure that you have a good
backup of the 'original' setup as well as the 'current' setup you can
dcpromo the 'old DC to member server status and finally remove it. You
might want to manually check things ( DNS, ADSIEdit, etc. to make sure that
all traces are gone ).

You should be good to go!

HTH,

Cary
