solved...if anyone is wondering i used the info from this post and it now
works:

In Windows 2000, right click on My Network Places, select Properties, double
click on the Local Area Connection , click the Properties tab, select TCP/IP
and click the Properties button. Click the Advanced button and select the
WINS tab. Select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Well I've been searching for the answer to these questions for about a
week. I find many people asking similar questions but no one ever
solving it for me.

With high hopes, I got to my WINS tab. It was already set "Select
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" so that did not help me.

Thanks anyway.

BTW, I have everything working using \\ip.address for networked drives
as well as printers. 2 Win98 PCs and a Windows 2000 Server. I'm
giving up as not having them in the "Network Nieghborhood" is no big
deal as all the drives are already mapped.
