2 Windows Operating Systems Listed

Hi,

One of my friends has had his computer for 2 years now
and when they started it for the first time, they did
something which created two Operating Systems ... both
are called "Windows XP Home."

When they boot up their computer, a black screen always
comes up asking which Operating System do they want to
load. They've always choosen the 2nd entry for some
reason.

Does anyone know how I can delete one of those Operating
Systems entries, so they can just have their machine boot
up normally? And if I can delete one of those systems
entries, does it matter which one?

Thanks in advance. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

You can edit the boot menu from Control Panel / System / Advanced (if I
remember well). Alternatively, unhide and unprotect a file called
C:\BOOT.INI and edit it.

Hi Andre,

I tried your recommendation, but unfortunately it did not
work.

Instead of seeing the offering of the two
choices: "Windows XP Home Edition" and "Windows XP Home
Edition", I now see - "Windows Default" and "Windows XP
Home Edition" as the operating system choices.

I left my friend's computer in the new startup screen
because at least it now gives 2 clear and distinct
choices, but the problem still remains. :-(

In editing the boot file I noticed that one line is
listed for "WinNT" and the other is just for "Windows."

It doesn't seem to matter which line I delete, the
black "operating system choice screen" always comes up.

If you have any more ideas, I'd love to hear them, even
though I won't be going back to his house until Sunday
night.

Thanks for your response.

THANKS WILL!!!! I'll just bet that this is going to
work! The problem description and the resolution look
like a perfect match. Can't wait to try it! :)

Thanks again. Happy New Year to you.

Hi

See if the following article helps:

"I have two installations of XP on the same partition,
how do I remove the one I don't need?"
