With no previous Linux on the machine, does this really say a Linux
version can be run on a Windows machine when loaded with the contents of
only 2- 1.44 MB floppy discs ?

And, can the downloads be kept on the HD, and installed from there so
floppies are not needed?

Gordon, I just read your other post after my first post, about *many*
small Linux distros on flopppies, so this is not so unique.

So a better question would be:
What is the best Linux version that is a small (1-2 MB) size that can
run on a W9X P166 machine, to try out Linux on the net?

I never tried it on a P166 but if you have a cd you might want to look
a Knoppix. You would get a more full featured version than what you
are likely to get on a floppy distro.
