1900x1200 screen display resolution not sticking - help.

Q

quest

Hi,

I ended up replacing a X600 with a PowerColor HD2400Pro.
I installed the latest drivers from the ATI web site (9.5 - I believe).

I have one problem: the selected resolution doesn't stick. Whenever I
reboot, it reverts back to 640x480, 8 bit color. I can set it back from
Catalyst. However, after the reboot it will go back.

More information:
1.) I can change the resolution only from Catalyst - not from the windows
display settings dialog !!
2.) As a test I did run directx test. After the test comes back from the 3D
test (rotating cube) the screen resolution reverts back to 640x480 as well !!
3.) The problem also happens after a user switch

In the meantime I also did a total uninstall with the ATI uninstall and
installed the version of the driver that came on a CD with the card (8.5x).
Same problem.

Could it be that the resolution info is not written correctly in the registry?
Is there a way to force the resolution through the registry?
What are the registry values that represent the current resolution? Are
there several entries? i.e. system default, then user setting?

It seems that because it is defaulting to 640x480, 8 bit colors, you
are having driver problems. You should locate, download and install
Driver Sweeper. Once installed, uninstall the ATi drivers, reboot,
access the Safe Mode, run Driver Sweeper in order to clean up left-
over settings and files. Reboot and let XP detect the "standard VGA"
card. Make sure the motherboard chipset drivers are installed and
then re-install the ATi drivers.

If you have additional problems, please check with the web forums on

quest:
(It goes without saying that your monitor supports the 1900 x 1200
resolution, right?)

The following may not resolve your problem, but let me mention it anyway...

We have also run into driver issues re a couple of PowerColor graphics cards
we've worked with, although not the same model you have. The problems we
encountered weren't precisely the same as yours but did involve driver
issues even when we installed the latest ATI driver as well as the driver
from PC's installation CD.

Anyway, try this in the meantime, assuming you haven't already done so...
Access http://www.powercolor.com/Global/support_driver.asp?ProductID=1362
and download/install the XP driver for your card. Do so even if the version
(8.52) is presumably the same version on the PC driver CD or earlier than
the one you've already installed via ATI.

It would probably be best to uninstall the present ATI drivers and whatever
other ATI-based software programs are listed from Add or Remove Programs
before installing the v8.52 driver.

While I'm not terribly sanguine about all this correcting the problem, it's
worth a shot.

Hi,

I uninstalled the driver using ATI utility
rebooted
used driver sweeper (I noticed that some ati files are coming back after a
clean)
downlaoded the latest driver from powercolor

Started the installation of the driver => the isntall tells me that it wors
only as an admin. However, I'm an admin...
So, this version is no good? The CD version doesn't calim I'm not the admin.
Could I risk the offical ATI driver?

Q

quest

never mind about hte admin thing. I rebooted again and I was able to install.

But I still have my original problem. SLight twist. It falls back to 800x600
32 bit. A minimal improvement (32 bit).

I start to suspect the multiuser setup to be an issue. Therefore, I wonder
if I could force it from the registry?

Hi Goku,

This is somewhat embarrassing. I can't get Regseeker to run. I downloaded
(from two sources) and there is no setup or exe included. So I figured I
would double-click on the desktop reg entry in the backup folder. No results
so far.
How do I get the regseeker operational?

Q

quest

I believe I have an issue then. I don't have any file with such an icon in my
folder. I downloaded from two sources and extracted the content. In both
cases I did not end up with such a file you describing.
I;m ending up with two subfolders (Backup and Languages) and 12 files.

OK, sorry for the delay. Please do the following.

Download and extract *RegSeeker* from *'here'
(http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm)*. Make sure the files are
extracted to a safe and convenient location. Open the program, and
switch to the *Find in registry...* section. Check all of the boxes
present and type *Resolution* in the *Search for:* field.

Click on the *Search!* box. It will perform a detailed search of all
the registry entries with resolution in their name. Please wait
patiently while the search is in progress. After the search is
completed, highlight all the resultant entries, right-click on them and
select *Export selected items*. Give it a suitable name and press the
*OK* button. Acknowledge the corresponding prompt by clicking *OK!*.

Now, browse to the location where you extracted the RegSeeker's files
and you will find a folder named *Backup*. Enter the folder and find the
file you found. Please upload the file to a file-hosting site and post
the link in your next reply.

I will give you the final touches after I have seen the contents of the
file. Hope that helps.

By the way, it would be a little more convenient if you could continue
on the Forums as the newsgroup does funny things to the code in my
posts. No pressure. Let me know how you want to continue.

Kindest regards.

quest - You should never run any additional "registry" tweaking
application. These are "marketed" to help with the registry but they
tend to cause more problems with the registry than they fix.

Head over to www.guru3d.com and check in the web forums there. This

Force the registry might be the solution but using a third party
"registry" tuner is NOT recommended. A quick look across the Internet
will show you a lot of "angry" posts concerning the screw-ups
"registry" tuner softwares will / can cause. Once a registry tuner
software "damages" a registry, an usual recommended repair is to
reinstall XP.

You can look at PowerStrip for more tools to look at the EDID
porblems.

I gave PowerStrip a try as I'm using for my theater projector. But it didn't
help either. After the reboot back to the non-optimal resolution.

Entry 1
Windows saved user xyz registry while an application or service was still
using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has
not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

Entry 2:
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

I looked at my event viewer and found two application warnings that may have
something to do with this.

Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by
other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

--> Could this be the root of my problem? If so, how does one debug what
service app is causing this?

P.S. do other people also have issues posting through the microsoft website?
Very often I get server temp unavailbale
