16 bit windows subsystem

when I try to use older programs, they won't work I keep getting a box with
the above heading and in the box it says:
C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose close to terminate
the application. I can't use or reinstall the applications and some I really
need for my small home business. I tried the compatibility tab and it
doesn't help what do I need to do I really need some of those programs. I
am desperate does anyone know what is wrong do I need to reinstall xp?

I had a similar problem. Determined there was not a copy of the autoexec.nt
file in \system32 but there was one in \repair. Copied it over and things
ran fine.
