16 bit windows subsystem error message

My PC is a DELL Dimension 3800 model and running Windows
XP Home with SP2. When I try to install a software from
the CD, I get this error message:
" 16 bit Windows Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file
is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose "close' to terminate the
application.
Close Ignore"

This CD software can install fine on other machine not
running SP2. I think there is a bug in SP2.

How I can fix this problem with SP2 ?
Thanks

thai, in addition to Will's link the problem with autoexec.nt can be
caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and creating
registry entries for that file. See this link:

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.
