16 bit VM problem after cleaning Symantec from registry

R

Richard Lane

The following is a cross post from the XP support news group.
After considerable work "stamping out" all registry Symantec program
references launching 16 bit programs causes an error message
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver
failed Dll initialization. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
If I choose 'Ignore' instead the application runs OK. Another 16 bit
program precedes the above message with
C:\DOCUMEN~1\ALLUSE~1\Programs\CIRCUI~1\SHORTC~1.PIF again if I choose
'Ignore' this other application runs OK.
Is there a way around this irritation w/o re-installing XP?

So you think that all you have to do is erase your hard disk and that's
going to be enough to get rid of Norton, you naive person, you?

OK, seriously...

If you haven't already, try the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

and if that doesn't do it you'll have to ask Symantec's oh-so-helpful
yechh-nical support.
Leonard,
The original problem (some month ago) was a 2 min dwelling Intel "splash
screen" and as I wanted to be free of NAV I un-installed NAV 2007 via
the add/remove control panel but the presence of WinFax Pro 10 prevented
a full removal. I took my m/c to my friendly technician who spent some 5
hrs trying to remove all Symantec program references. I returned after a
2 week sailing cruise to find that the Intel splash screen now only
lasted 50 secs but on running 16 bit programs I received the VM error
messages I described. Is there any way to re-install the missing or
corrupt DLLs using my OEM XP CD? If not I think I would rather put up
with the error message as they only require one mouse click to work around.
Thanks, Dick

Hi Richard,

This might help:
Errors regarding 16-bit MS-DOS subsystem

Regards,
Patti,
The XP Registry key is somewhat different from that of your reference
viz. My
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers

However I deleted the VDD binary value, closed Regedit, rebooted but
still the same VM error messages though no further harm seems to have
occurred.
Thanks for the suggestio anyway.

Fixed the VM problem, my laptop has no Symantec entries and runs 16 bit
programs OK so I copied it's RH pane of the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDO
to the same key in my desktop's registry and all is fine.
Thanks for all your suggestions
Dick
