12 in 1 card reader

Hi
Please help.
I have just tried to put a SD memory card in my card reader to find that the
normal window that appears to allow you to view photos etc did not appear.
The green light on the card reader did come on, though. I checked on my
computer and the only devices with removable storage are the floppy (A) drive
and the DVD (D) drive. The others have gone.
I have tried the device manager but card reader does not appear under the
USB section, or any other section, as far as I can see. Even when I scan for
recent hardware changes. Have tried re-booting. No joy.
As far as I can remember, the last time I used it was when I put a compact
flash card in, and this worked ok.
I would be very grateful for any help.
Thanks

Use Windows XP2

A Little Bit of Everything..

I'm having the exact same problem. I have used the internal SD/MMC/SM/MS... drive on my computer many times to access microSD card via an SD adapter countless times.

Today when I placed the card in the drive I had a green light appear, but
the explorer did not open a window with the SD card contents. Also,
MyComputer no longer lists the drive, it only shows the hard drive and
partition (C: and D:) and the DVD/RW drive (E:). Drives F:-M: have somehow
disappeared.

I have rebooted, attempted to manually locate them through the device
manager, tried to have the computer find them, and I'm coming up empty handed.

Here's what i think happened, but I'm just shooting in the dark... There's
the little icon that appears in the system tray (opposite the Start menu)
which is the "safely remove hardware" icon that you follow when disconnecting
devices to prevent some hypothetical damage. well, i never used this with
the SD card assuming some kind of plug-and-play function of microsoft. Well,
i got on a conservative little kick for a couple days and used the icon to
remove the card (click the icon, click stop, icon goes away "it's now safe to
remove your hardware". well, i think it uninstalled the drive all together.

Long story short, I'm feeling a little lost, much like the original poster.
If you have any info, or at least know which direction to point us, I would
greatly appreciate it, Thanks!

Unplug it, re-boot, and then plug it back in.

What size SD card do you have? I've seen 1 GB cards for
$19.95 at Wal-Mart this week. But the firmware in the
reader might not support the larger cards.

Thank you for your quick reply. I saw that in the previous thread, and
neglected to mention that in my troubleshooting. I've rebooted the computer
with the SD card in the reader, and with it out, with no change.

I've been using the same 1GB micro SD card with an SD adapter (both SanDisk)
without any problems for a few months until this substantial glitch. I would
like to try and update or re-install the drivers, but the device manager
doesn't even recognise the reader exists.

You might delete all the USB hubs, ports and devices using
the Device Manager and then reboot. PnP should reinstall all
the drivers and hardware. I would unplug the USB devices
and then plug them in after the reboot.

If that doesn't work, there must be some hardware problem,
try the reader on another computer or try another reader on
that computer.

Good luck.

So. funny story....
I didn't realize it but on my "safety week" binge, i did the same thing to
my laptop where i clicked "safely remove hardware" before removing the SD
card, and it removed the drive altogether. I rebooted the laptop, and it
recognized the drive again... which makes this PC problem that much more
frustrating.

I'll try your advice when I get home, and I think when all else fails i may
open the box, disconnect the drive, reconnect it and see if it recognises it
as new hardware. I am disappointed in microsoft's ability to heal itself, but
I know it's me just acting out at my own mistake. <shrug>

anyhow, i'll let you know how it all fares in the end. thanks again for your
input

Me again.

Thanks for all the replies. I actually sorted the matter out before the
first reply appeared! I'm not really sure what fixed the problem but I tried
several things. I think it was this:

Go to device manager, highlight the name of your computer at the top of the
list, right click this and the message "Scan for hardware changes" should
appear. Click on this and let the computer do this. Then switch the computer
off and leave it for 24 hours. When I switched mine back on and inserted a
card, the pop up box appeared and allowed me to show the photos etc. The
drives also appeared in My Computer again and in the device manager list
under USB Controllers.

To be honest, this is the only thing of substance that I actually did, as
far as I can remember. The other things were just checking different things.
Maybe try it a couple of times, if the first one doesn't work. I think that
the switching off and leaving for 24 hours is the important bit.

Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.
