100% CPU

something funky going on after I install either Home, Pro, even Corp with
SP2. If i launch task manager immediately I can view the services.
SVCHOST.exe seems to be the culprit. It does not show 100%, but the meter is
pegged. Once I end the process I can launch apps, ie, office...etc.

If load Home, Pro w/ SP1, this doesn't happen. I installed A/V, firewall
and spyware removal, then installed SP2, and I was back to the system hanging.

I did a clean install on 3 different pc's with the same thing happening.
System hangs, cannot launch task mgr, IE or other apps. My Computer, Docs
opens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, reply to (e-mail address removed)

thanks

There is no such thing as XP Corp. that is a euphemism for pirated.

SVCHOST.exe is a legitimate Microsoft file. It can also be malware.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Update whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

How many svchost.exes are supposed to be running? I have several that show
up in my task manager. Four say they are 'system', the other two are
"network service" and "local service"

Also, when I follow the link, and try to do as it suggests, my computer
tells me that 'tasklist' isn't recognized.

I have two svchosts running, but I have very few services running.

As many as six svchost.exes running is not uncommon.

Tasklist does not come with XP Home. Only with XP Professional.

If you have XP Professional and tasklist does not work then your PATH is
messed up.

Did you you scan for malware?

The following works. I did it when I had XP Home.

1. Download Tasklist.exe.

Tasklist.exe available here:
http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm

Or...

Microsoft Windows XP - Tips & Fixes
Click on:
Tasklist.exe - Lists all processes & services (/Svc)

Or...

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/tasklist.zip

2. Copy tasklist.exe to

C:\WINDOWS\system32
or
%windir%\system32

3. Open a Command Prompt.

Start | Run | type: cmd | Click OK |
When the Command Prompt window opens type:

tasklist /svc

Hit your ENTER key.

Also:

tasklist /?

Displays Help and usage.

First - I've run updated scans both for viruses and spyware - nothing exists
on my system (XP Pro 2).

At the very end of startup loading, the final svchost.exe runs and goes to
100% CPU. It appears that it is related to FTTPFilter but I'm not sure.
When I stop the process, everything works find except the task bar has shrunk
to one level (I always use it "2 wide" or the color has gone from blue to
white. I've also done diagnostic startups with everything and it's still
there.

Thanks for your help.
