100% CPU usage

Hello,

I have a PC / AMD with Widows XP Home (OEM). Computer is 4 years old
and have not had problems until recently. Last December (2007) I
installed Norton 360.

Initially after installation I had no problems until two weeks ago. I
mention Norton 360 only becuase this is the only significate change
over the last year. I do not know if Norton 360 is the source of the
problem.

Booting the computer is not a problem but after I start to work the
mouse pointer freezes. I am able to cntrl alt del and bring up task
manager to see all programs running normally but CPU is at 100%.
After about 20 seconds the computer unfreezes. Usually I can continue
to work but sometimes all pointers have been lost and I cannot open
any programs. Compter shuts down normally and upon restart all is
normal until the next freeze.

During 100% CPU usage Process Explorere shows Explorer.exe and
ccsvchst.exe (Symantec Servive Network) each varying between 50 - 80%.
At the time I do not have windows explorer open.

Does anyone have an idea of what is happening and how to fix it?

Thank you.

Are you leaving your computer on 24/7?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

The Dell Inspiron 6400 had a firmware bug that caused
the temperature below about 55F to be reported as
255C (hot!). The system responded to that warning by
turning off the processor cache, and slow-clocking the
CPU. This resulted in 100% cpu usage for blameless
programs, as they tried to finish on a no longer fast
processor.

(A BIOS upgrade fixes this in the 6400)

I just mention it as producing those symptoms. If you
reboot, it's warmed up and runs normally until it gets cold
again someday and you start it up again. If there's some
way to check cache turned on and processor clock speed, it
might be worth looking at.

You could follow the trouble reports to the southern
hemisphere in the summer and the northern hemisphere
in the winter, from the USA, until they figured it out.
