my new laptop was fine then all of a sudden too slow to watch a movie or
listen to music. Takes a long time to boot up and everything is slow, even
the mouse is halty.

Error ID 9 or 51 might have something to do with it, i think this is where
everything went wrong...please, please help

"Error ID 9 or 51" is pretty much useless insofar as giving you any
help with this problem is concerned.

Where, when and how did this (these?) error message(s) appear?
Is that the complete and total information content of the error
message? Just "Error ID 9 or 51" and nothing more?

When your machine is performing slowly press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring
up the Windows Task Manager.
Go to the Processes tab.
Click twice on the CPU column header. That will sort the list into
descending order based on CPU usage.
Make a list of the 5 items at the top of the list and the CPU
percentage shown for each.
Post that information in a reply back here.

Good luck

Hi Ron, There the ones at the top keep changing but svchost.exe is from 75%
to 99% so I think that is where the problem lies.

Oh, fyi, I have both Norton's AntiVirus and Norton's Internet Security, but
at the time the problem started only had Norton's AntiVirus which had not
been updated in about two months.

Sounds like it all right. Problem is that there are always multiple
instances of SVCHOST running and each instance can have as many as 24
separate services running under it.

On the processes tab make note of the PID number for the problem
instance of SVCHOST.

Then open a Command Prompt window and enter the following command:

TASKLIST /SVC

Locate the PID number for the problem instance of svchost and make
note of the names of the services that are running under it. Post
that information back here.

If you do not have TASKLIST installed on your computer you can
download it from http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/download/winxp.htm

Good luck

ok, now everytime i go to task manager only the System Idle Process is using
70-99%. No svchost. Is it possibly a hardware problem. Even the short song
when u log on and off don't play fluidly the computer is so slow. I have
used hijackthis.exe to check registry and nothing seems out of the ordinary.
I hope it is not processor but nothing else seems to be coming up.
let me know what you think, and thanks a ton!
