1) Windows picture and fax viewer 2) Hardware unrecognized

Hello!
I'm just a plain Jane trying to find help with my windows/pc problems.

1) After I downloaded and installed a copy of ACDSee from Bearshare (and
failed to get it running with a proper key), to uninstall it and now
everytime I click on a picture file (most of my pics are Jpegs) Windows
picture viewer does not start at all. I have clicked on the jpeg file and
tried to open with Picture viewer, but nothing happens. I can open with other
programs, like Paint or Nero Photosnap Image viewer, or MS Office picture
manager. Where did Windows Picture and Fax viewer go? What is the program
file for that? Do I have to reinstall it?

2) I have a Pentax Optio 330 dig cam that was interancting fine with my pc
until a few months ago. I had the drives installed and previously and had no
trouble recognizing it whenever I connected the usb port, now it does nothing
when I connect. I mean, it recognizes an "invalid" drive - doesn' not show
the pictures or any files at all for that matter. It's an empty driver, even
though my flash card is full. Could later windows or vaio updates have
interfered with something that was working before? I tried to reinstall the
drive directly from pentax, followed the instructions very carefully but
still no deal. Where could I go to find more specific help on the topic?

Thanks. Hopefuly I gave enough info.

For #1, try this

Start | Run, type "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" without the quotes. Click Ok.

Thanks Rock, sooo very much! I am glad I came here. I ran regsvr32
shimgvw.dll as you told me and I was immediatelly able to open my pics with
windows pic and fax viewer.
Out of curiosity, what does that dll file do? How did I lose or corrupt it?
By unisntalling the ASD See program perhaps?

Thanks again. I love smart people. :)

Hi,

Shimgvw.dll is a library file that deals with image files. The other program
had usurped the default position for opening those files, and once removed
the system no longer had a default action for them. Reregistering the
library file reset it as the default (the viewer is the installation default
action).

You're welcome and thanks for posting back. I see Rick answered your
questions about why it happened.
