Upgraded from 2000 Pro to XP Pro and received 0x0000007e error on reboot to
start XP. STOP screen also lists "WMILIB.sys - Address F7D31858....."
I can get to SAFE mode w/ Network support and have updated the BIOS (ASUS
A7N8X MB), video drivers, network drivers, SATA drivers, and other mb system
drivers - still no luck.
Also deleted "extra" programs such as ZoneAlarm, etc...
No "?" are found when looking at Device Manager
Hard drives have over 60% free
System ran perfectly prior to attempted XP Pro upgrade.
System is as follows:
ASUS A7N8X mb w/ AMD Athlon XP 2700+
2 80gb SATA in RAID stripe configuration
1 Gb memory
ASUS 9280 GeForce4 Ti 4200 video card

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is caused by a system driver corruption... Try running "verifier.exe" in
safe mode and cancel the system drivers check during boot up. If by doing so
enables you to start up Windows XP properly, download SP2 and install it.
(This maybe able to fix those system driver. If this doesn't, well, you can
still start your system properly...)
If the action fails... format your hard disk and do a clean install...
(Others may have a better way of resolving this...)

Yi,

Similar to your suggestion, I read a posting from Joshua Smith recommending
a procedure using "verifier". It is in the "blue screen at bootup with error
messages" thread.

Prior to using "verifier" the following were my error codes:
STOP: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf7d31858, 0xf7c86b70, 0xf7c8686c)
WMILIB.SYS - Address F7d31858 at F7d31000

After using "verifier" from SAFE MODE and selecting all non-Microsoft
drivers, I got the following simialr error codes:
STOP: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0xf7989858, 0xf78d6b4c, 0xf78d6848)
WMILIB.SYS - Address F7989858 at F7989000

The XP Pro upgrade package I purchased already included SP2.

I sincerely hope that I do not have to do a clean install since the effort
would obviously be significant to reload programs/files/etc... Being that my
system worked perfectly under Win 2000 Pro and the XP Hardware Compatability
check found no problems with my system prior to installation, I will be very
dissappointed in Microdoft and XP if this is required.

Again, any additional suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
