I had made a zip file back in November of 2004, backing up the My Documents
folder on my computer because I was going to reinstall WinXP. I've
reinstalled WinXP and now I can not access the zip file. Is it because the
file has the same name as the resident folder "my documents?" Is it possible
to overcome this? I have very important documents in that zip file that are
irreplaceable. Please give me some info on this. It would be greatly
appreciated. Any info at all. Thank you. At the time I didn't think
anything of it but usually when you zip files it takes the name of the folder
or something of that sort. It won't happen again, that is for sure.

Your inability to open your file has nothing to do with the name you've
given it. It is possible for a compressed file to become corrupted. What
error do you get when you try to open your file? What program did you use to
zip the file? Was it WinZip (or some other third party app) or did you use
XP's built in compression program?

If you used third party software it might have it's own "Repair" function.
If not and you know the file is corrupt then a third party solution like
this freeware http://www.zip-repair.com/index.html or this is a retail
product http://www.repairfile.com/ this might be helpful.

I suggest that before you try "fixing" the file that you copy it "As Is" to
another location first then work on the copy. If the data it contains is
highly important to you perhaps a professional service will be needed. These
can however cost a lot of money and are not always able to recover lost
data.

Hi, nycboyga, did you also install the Winzip program after the XP
re-install?
Just a thought.

Unfortunately, I did install that program after the re-install. I did not
have it on my computer before the re-install. I used the XP built-in zip
program. I'm starting to wonder, though...I think I made a mistake in
thinking that one can compress a file that is already compressed (mpeg being
compressed again into a zip file). It seems that these are the files that
are corrupted in all of my zip files and that is causing the problems with me
not being able to access the other info on there.

Thank you so much for the info. It appeared that the first product fixed the
problem, but it didn't. It only rescued a couple of files. The second
product appears to be able to rescue 99% of the files, however, it costs
money, which is not really a problem, but I'm worried that I'll pay for
something that may not actually work in the long run. Maybe I can cut the
zip file in half and then try to repair it in the eval version of this
software (max is 3GB, mine is over 4GB), if this is possible. Still very
helpful and I appreciate this very much. Thanks again.
