You have to be kidding - PowerPoint 2003

Sad Story....

I have 5 GB of an interface I created in PowerPoint 2000
which has numerous menus which display photos or videos
about the subject selected. The smart folks in my IT
department thought we should upgrade to Office 2003.

Long story short is that when you select a action button
which calls another PowerPoint file only which has the
video inserted in it, only first MPEG2 video plays. When
you select another button for another PowerPoint file
with a MPEG2 video either a white or black screen appears
with no video or sound. Same network interface run from
a Office 2000 machine runs perfect.

Only with MPEG2 videos have problems. AVI and MPEG1 seem
fine.

Totally confuzed,

MIke

Thanks for the links....

It is not a codec problem.

It is a bug (feature)in PPT 2003. System that worked was
upgraded to Office 2003. Then no workie. MPEG2s play
fine in PPT 2003 unless you hyperlink to other PPt files
which have mpegs insert in them...

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]
[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -

Hello,

A couple of things to check....

1) What is the length (# of characters) of the <path>/<filename> from the
presentation to the movies?
NOTE: If you copy a movie which doesn't play from it's current
location to the location of the presentation which uses the movie, does it
work?

2) Try turning down the hardware acceleration settings for your display
hardware:
A) Open the "Display" control panel
B) In the "Settings" tab, click on the "Advanced" button
C) In the "Troubleshoot" tab, move the slider to the left
D) Click "Apply" and try view movie in presentation again
E) If movie doesn't play, repeat steps C and D until it's all the way
to the left
NOTE: If this eventually results in movie playing as desired, contact
vendor to see if they have a more recent, Microsoft certified version of
the display driver available.

I've experienced the same problem on three machines I've recently upgraded to
Office 2003 (two desktop, one laptop). Videos (AVI movies compressed using
the Indeo5 compressor) do not run in the latest PPT. I've reverted these
machines to PPT from Office XP and movies run once more!

The issue is not related to path length, as I've created new docs in c:\temp
with the same problem. And I can successfully view the movies in both WMP
and mplay32.exe. These systems are also fully patched up (both XP and Office
Updates fully applied).

Any updated news, please share! I'm just happy I realized this before a
major deadline.

http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm has a few things to try for this
situation, but I don't know that they'll resolve your issue. Worth a shot,
though.

PPT 2003 actually tries to hand the video off to Windows Media Player if it
thinks the MCI Media Player can't play the files for some reason, but I
think there's something wonky in that handoff that causes these problems. I
wonder if converting the AVIs to MPEG would resolve it?

I've seen the same problem on a number of machines with Powerpoint 2003 and
Indeo 5.1 AVIs. They all play fine with Media player, mplay32.exe and even a
second Powerpoint 2002 installation in the same partition ! (which is my
current workaround). The solutions recommended so far have been suggested
elsewhere but unfortunately do not solve the problem.

Anyone with a solution (or even an explanation) would be greatly appreciated.

Ditto.

I've had to revert to PPT from the Office XP disk to get
this working. These same AVI files play within both
Windows Media Player (v9) and mplay32.exe, so I really
don't think it can be a codec issue. Is this correct?

I experienced similar problems with avi files in ppt. I
posted a mesasge and received the reply listed below. To
make a long story short, I updated DirectX and Windows
Media Player and that solved the problem.

PowerPoint2003 on WinXP Pro SP2: I have an avi file with
cvid Cinepak Codec. It plays fine from a Windows Explorer
double-click, and from a Command prompt mplay32.exe
execution. But when I insert it into a ppt slide it will
not play. The path/file name length is less than 128
characters (it's about 50). I had the same problem under
WinXP SP1. I have swapped the Cinepak Codec dll (version
1.10.0.11). I have updated the video driver. I have copied
the avi file to another WinXP Pro SP2 PowerPoint2003 PC
and it plays correctly in ppt, so the problem is isolated
to this particular PC. I've exhausted research and don't
know where to turn next.
