You do not have permission to update Windows XP

I can't install any more updates from windowsupdate.com.
I tried
downloading and manually installing just one of the updates
(KB841873). It didn't work. I got the error "You do not
have
permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your
system
administrator."

I've tried to log in as both a domain admin and local
admin. I've
even removed the laptop from the domain and tried again
from the local
admin account. No dice.

I can't see any local security policies that would prevent
this from
working. Any suggestions?

Try both of these articles: I have come across this
before, sometimes they help, sometimes they don't. On the
occasion it didn't help, I believe it was a problem with
the cryptographic service being corrupted as it wouldn't
allow me to install updates from a CD either.Had to do a
repair install in that case.
