Yesterday, with Steve's I had my 2 PC network operating the way I think it
should.
Both PCs running XP SP2.
I have a USB ADSL modem on my main PC and both PCs cabled to a hub.
Today my second PC seems to be OK, displaying all of its shared folders
under Mshome in Microsoft Windows Network in Windows Explorer.
I assume that this is as expected, but that it should also display the
shared folders on the main PC.
I am unable to get the main PC to display anything under Mshome in its
Windows Explorer.
I am giving here the dialogue box messages that I get given, hoping that
they will be meaningful to the cognescenti who hopefully can suggest a
logical approach, or at least the next steps I should take.
I seem to be just going around and around in circles at present with no
change to the current situation.

Local Area Connection Status
Limited or no connectivity.
You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. The
problem ocurred because the network did not assign a network address to the
computer.

Network Connection details.
Physical Address 00-0C-76-9E-1A-D1
IP Address 169.254.125.38
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0

Entire Network
Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

Hoping there are some clues here.
TIA

Brian,

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version (Home / Pro), and Service Pack
level) with each ipconfig listing.

The "Limited or no connectivity" message suggests either a connectivity problem,
or a problem with the DHCP server (ICS component) on the main computer.
Assuming it's running ICS.

Did you setup the computers by hand, or using the network wizard? Is there a
personal firewall on either computer?

Thanks very much Chuck.
I was unable to get your command to save the ipconfig output, to save it to
a file.
I typed in ipconfig(space)/all(space)c:\ipconfig.txt
but no file was saved. I tried d in place of c but still no joy.
However your post has been very helpful.
It seems to be a firewall-related problem.
I have had it all going again at times.
We shall see what tomorrow will bring.
Thanks

Brian,

For future reference, it's ipconfig(space)/all(space)(right
arrow)c:\ipconfig.txt. The right arrow, or redirect, is the key here.

So let's see what the firewall situation shows. And if that isn't it, start
again.

I think I am nearly there.
I have certainly cleared the swamp of most of the alligators.
