How do I open/decode these?

Is there a way to do it through Outlook Express, or do I need some external
program (if so then which ones should I look for?)

Look into yProxy from brawnylads software. Don't remember the url, just
google for it.
There are others, but this one works for me and is really easy.

Outlook Express has no native support for yEnc. You need an add-in
called YPROXY, available from http://www.brawnylads.com (I think that's
their URL) - or another newsreader

You need a program like Yproxy which willdecode yenc in OE. You can find it
at
www.brawnylads.com

thanks everyone... works like a charm... question - why did people create
the yEncoding method in the first place? I've been told it's not much
better than uuencode or base64 or whatever the standard encoding method
is... not many people seem to have support for this either, so WHY was it
created, and why are people using it?

30% better compression...files are smaller, they transfer in less time, use
less server space..etc
