I used XXCLONE to copy my OS to my new hard drive. When I installed that
drive as a master and tried to boot it, I got an error message that my
system either doesn't have a paging file, or that the file is too small. It
gave me instructions for changing it, though naturally, I couldn't use the
instructions since the system wouldn't finish booting up.

The W2K repair console won't fix the problem. What do I need to do? Can I
copy the paging file manually from the old HD to the new one? What is the
name of the file?

Windows should be able to create a page file if the setting that allows
Windows to manage the page file is set. Have you tried booting into
Safe Mode?

Try doing the whole backup again with no other programs active.

Try booting to safe mode and see if it repairs. I have not found a freeware
ghosting package that works everytime. You can try again, but I would back
up the files you want to keep from the old drive, then format and reload
Windows to the new drive. You'll also get the benefits of a fresh O/S on the
new drive.

I found the problem while Googling (should have tried that first, eh?)

When I cloned the system, I told XXCLONE that it was drive D. Of course,
at that time it was, but it would become drive C when I rebooted the
system.

The solution is to use a Win9x boot disk, and FDISK/MBR. Of course, I
could have recloned the drive and set the drive as C, but it would have
taken much longer that way.

There's a /mbr option in the free version of XXClone...

Yes, and that's what caused the problem. I told XXCLONE that the drive was
D: and that's how it wrote the MBR.
