I have an emachines notebook, AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1.8 GHz & 512 MB RAM.

It is running XP Home Edition. I have installed all the updates (except
sp2) and everything is fine.
When I install SP2, the machine will no longer shutdown. It hangs at the
"windows is shutting down" screen. Removing SP2 solves the problem.

I've loooked through the KB, but can't find any references to this problem.
Can anyone give me a place to start looking please.

Thanks in advance.

Could be you have a program that is not releasing memory at shut down. I had
the same problem. I went to:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en
and downlaoded a file call UPHCLEAN.EXE that forces any program to release
memory. After installing UPHCLEAN I don't have the problem. Might give that
a try.
