XPsp1 = cd burner not burning, why?

I have tested this on two computers. With my original XP disk I have no
trouble burning cd's. As soon as I install SP1 and then download all the
updates from the Microsoft website, the cd burner won't burn. I start
getting a "disk is not writable" error. If I reformat and put the old XP
back on there and don't update, I have no problems.

I have tried Windows Media Player and Nero as my burning software. Both cd
writers are HP brand. Any ideas?

First, determine if you have the latest firmware upgrade for the HP
CD-Writer
(you did not specify which HP model or whether this was a CD or DVD Writer)

I will assume that your HP CD-Writer firmware is current, then look at these
following Microsoft Knowledgebase articles:

CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device

CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install

Well, well, well. I was using Maxell CDRW's. I went and bought some Verbatim
CD's and they work fine. I also got another burning software from the HP
website called Record Now. When I put in the Maxell cd, I get a message that
says this disk is not compatible with your burner. When I put in the
Verbatim, it records fine. Sure wish I had not bought 50 Maxell's !!!!!
