XP's Z Order (window stacking)

Okay, so somehow my z order got all SNAFUed. Windows open on top of windows,
they come back to the foreground when I click on a non-related window.

Does -anyone- know how to solve this issue? Any idea where the z order is
located in the registry? Is there a registry hack to FIX this incredibly
annoying problem?

Here is a link to an article that further explains the issue I am having.
http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/default.asp?joel.3.38745.9

I changed -nothing- and this suddenly happened on it's own. I have an OEM
PC, so just doing a simple XP repair install is out of the question. I also
tried a system restore to about a month ago (when I KNOW I wasn't
experiencing this) and that didn't work. I am at my wit's end, This ||
close to formatting, but I would -really- rather not.

Thanks for any help.

I sincerely doubt that it's a registry matter - not EVERYTHING is in the
registry or soluble there as per popular lore. If it's not some malware
involved then some applcation libraries are involved. A DLL or two may
need to be reregistered.

Well do you have any idea what may be causing this? Or where to go to look
for help? It's maddening.

Thanks.

It happens under both accounts I have on the PC. Believe me, I thought of
just deleting this account and creating a new one.

Thanks

I'm now clutching at straws but I would still try and
create a brand new account, then log on under it.

Sorry, I was away. No, that didn't solve the problem, so it's something universal. So...any other suggestions? Thanks again.

SO....is that it? No one else can help me? I find it hard to believe no one
on a Windows forum can help me with this ever-increasingly annoying problem.

The original problem was snipped away long ago so no new readers have
any idea what you're on about.

What, that there is no permanent solution to a bug that's been known about
since the early Whistler beta's? Sorry, there isn't any one solution that
will resolve it permanently. Lots of temporary fixes, but nothing that works
for everyone outside of avoiding the actions that mess up the Z order.

as stated, the original post is gone, but I guess your problem is messed
up z-order.

2 cents:

I have seen this issue w/ IrfanView (interacting w/ something else no
doubt; IV is a good product, I'm not bitching about it); after using it to
view a full-screen image the z-order goes crazy. this was an issue w/ an
earlier version (3.95 I think), it went away w/ the next set of updates
and then came back again. version 3.97 seems to not have this bug. If
you're using IV then try reverting to 3.97.

this seems to be related to how some apps impliment the "keep on top"
option (poorly...)
