XPs refusal to activate DMA setting

I have two identical 80 gig seagate hard drives in my 2ghz dell pentium
(the second drive was installed about a year after the first)

under device mngr/ide controllers/primary/advanced both drive 0 and drive
1 are set to "DMA, if available"

the transfer mode under drive 1 reflects that DMA 5 is being used
the transfer mode under drive 0 reflects PIO only

I have manually switched the setting on drive 0 several times in the hope
of resetting the mode without sucess.

I also attempted to uninstall/reinstall the driver, again without any
change (both drives have the same driver)

I read that XP blocks DMA use for a device after receiving 6 time out
errors.

is there any way to restore DMA use for drive 0? any help would be
greatly appreciated

Did you remember to set one as a slave?

If theyre on the same IDE connection?

Both drives are set for cable select. drive 0 is on the master connector
