I am about to purchase a second PC, first is a Dell and has XP1, which is
excellent, and am torn between XP 2 (I assume) and Vista. When, according
to their latest pronouncements, does XP2 become unsupported by MS?

XP mainstream support ends 04/14/2009
XP SP1 mainstream support has already ended
XP SP2 mainstream support ends 12 months after the release of the next
service pack or by 04/14/2009

And we ourselves will be supporting Windows XP by 2050 at least! ;)

XP Home http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3221
XP Pro http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223
XP Service Pack 2 http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=6794

Note: It is anticipated, but not confirmed, that there will be a
Service Pack 3 issued for Windows XP sometime in 2008.

This may or may not have the effect of extending the product lifcycle
for Windows XP editions.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck

Thanks, guys.

I too heard about XP3.

My concern is - do I buy XP now if it may go unsupported within the next
2/3
years. The consensus appears to be that is unlikely. So would you buy XP
now?

I would! Windows XP is the best version Microsoft ever created! Windows
2000 is second and Windows 98SE is third IMHO. And Windows ME and MS Bob
are the worst (well ME was better than Windows 1 or 2 and marginally
better than Windows 3.xx LOL). Was MS Bob actually an OS or an desktop?
LOL

OK by me. Just what we have been doing all along with Windows 3.X and
Windows for Workgroups 3.X. It takes this long to develop into a bug-
free state.

Oh yes, if you want almost bug free software... older versions are the
way to go for the most part. At least the bugs are mostly all
documented. ;)

I would not buy XP now if it's new hardware. Though XP will be supported
for a few years, Vista is the replacement OS. On the right hardware with
good drives it runs well. I would not go with a legacy OS.

By the way, there is no XP1 or XP2. It's XP with service packs. And SP1 is
not supported for fixes anymore.

Thanks, Rock. I agree and thanks for putting me right.
