Quick question - maybe... I updated some files (on Microsoft website) and
one of the upgrades caused the entire boot process to change - forcing me to
select a user - where previously - the machine booted directly to the
desktop. I did a system restore to yesterday - which resolved it. But - does
anyone know which update caused this - I would hate to do it again - but
want to keep updating the OS. Thanks

You installed the .net framework, which added a user - so now XP thinks
you need to choose one. Easy to fix - either use tweakuiXP (free
download from MS powertoys site .. and has many useful features) or else
start, run, control userpasswords2, and set automatic logon that way.
