I removed my ram and then re-installed it. It's in there correctly and I
tried it in both slots but my pc won't get past the first screen that says
Compaq. XP won't load. What should I do? Setup doesn't work either.

at the Compaq screen press [DEL] to get into the bios
and check that the memory is recognize
if not then you may have damaged it when you removed it
Alternatively you can try to get a bios update from Compaq's website

Personally I would
get rid of Compaq

When I press del I get an error message saying there's a problem with my
keyboard and to check the connection. It's plugged in fine. F10 brings up
the same message. And sometimes it does nothing at all.

I hope someone replies who can help.
I've always had problems accessing the bios on a Compaq and I read
somewhere that Compaq restricts access to the Bios

It seems as if the reason why it's not booting is because of the memory.
So I would try to Re-seat the memory in the original slot that it was in
and get a bios update from Compaq.
Hopefully someone else can reply with a complete solution to your problem

: Is there another way to boot WinXP if compact restricts access to the
bios.

The odds are slim, but make sure you didn't knock an IDE cable loose. I see
it quite a bit. Good luck.
