I have been fixing a friend pc which won't start and has a
suspect registry. I've worked half way through KB307545
and copied the files from the repair directory.

Trouble is on restart it reports that the "system"
registry hive is corrupt even though I coppied it from the
repair directory!

Does anyone know where I can get a clean copy of this file?

Thanks

I have resisted this as I thought that this would wipe data on his pc he has mutliple users set up and documnets and phots that need to be retained.

Could I get a copy of the system file from another xp machine or doyou think I have bigger problems!

Thanks

Repairing XP from recovery console might flush the data stored in My Documents folder :(

Check out the below sites:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

In case of OEM XP see this:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/oem.htm

Good Luck!

I've tried recovering from a previous point but that didn't work :-(

It is looking like a reinstall is the right way to go but I am not sure if the existing data will be wiped. I have had a fes yes and no answers to this!

Hi Dave,

Before you repair XP from recovery console, try the steps provided in the below MS support site:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308041

Also, see this [might help in some cases]

Having followed the KB directions, without a successful reboot, and wiothout the ability to boot in SAFE MODE and do a System restore, then you'll need to do a repair install.

If the data is critical, put the drive into another machine as slave
and copy the important stuff off.
